Downtown Clarkesville Square designated as historic district

Downtown Clarkesville square designated as historic district

A new designation for downtown Clarkesville is now official, with the rebuilt downtown square recently being listed as a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places.

The district runs along Washington Street and is roughly bounded by Jefferson, Morgan, Madison, Monroe and Grant Streets.

City officials have been collaborating with the Georgia Department of Community Affairs to secure this designation since the March 2014 fire.

“There are a great many steps to achieving this important designation,” said Mayor Barrie Aycock. “I am grateful to all of the people who played a pivotal role in the multi-step, lengthy process.”

The National Parks Services will soon add Clarkesville’s historic square to its listings and an official certificate and announcement will be forthcoming from the Georgia Historic Preservation Division, according to Cynthia Catellier, National Register Historian for the Georgia Department of Community Affairs.

“Congratulations all around for the efforts on behalf of this very deserving nomination,” Catellier stated.
